A Gentle Start to a Lifelong Skill

At this age, it’s less about understanding why and much more about building a simple, physical habit early. Over six short sessions, children learn to place a hand on their heart, breathe slowly, and say a short, memorable rhyme together, giving them something concrete they can return to whenever they feel a bit wobbly, long before they have the words to explain what they’re feeling.

Each session is around 4 to 5 minutes, pre-recorded, and ready to play. There’s nothing for staff to prepare, script or facilitate.

What The Children Learn

Every session shares the same anchor practice, breathing slowly with a hand on the heart, which helps a young child’s whole body settle. Alongside the breathing, children learn a short, gentle rhyme that gives the practice a memorable shape, so they can carry it with them long after the session ends.

There’s no theory at this age, and no expectation that children understand the science behind what they’re doing. Just gentle, repeated practice, delivered with warmth, so the habit has a chance to take root early.

Built With Every Child In Mind

Every child’s nervous system is different, and that’s especially true for neurodivergent children, who may experience stress, sensory input and regulation in their own particular way. This anchor practice is a genuinely good fit for a mixed EYFS classroom, because it asks nothing of a child beyond a hand on the heart and a slow breath. There’s no talking required, no cognitive processing, and no right or wrong way to do it, so it tends to work well across a whole range of needs and communication styles, not just for children who find verbal approaches to regulation easy.

Why This Matters So Early

Every session shares the same anchor practice, breathing slowly with a hand on the heart, which helps a young child’s whole body settle. Alongside the breathing, children learn a short, gentle rhyme that gives the practice a memorable shape, so they can carry it with them long after the session ends.

There’s no theory at this age, and no expectation that children understand the science behind what they’re doing. Just gentle, repeated practice, delivered with warmth, so the habit has a chance to take root early.
